Slip Disc (Herniated Disc)

A "slip disc" or herniated disc occurs when the soft inner gel of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in the tougher exterior. This can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness, or weakness. Fortunately, the vast majority of herniated discs can be successfully treated conservatively with physiotherapy.

What are the common symptoms?

• Arm or leg pain depending on whether the disc is in the neck or lower back\n• Numbness or tingling in the body part served by the affected nerves\n• Weakness in the muscles, causing stumbling or inability to lift items

How do we treat this condition?

We specialize in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) to centralize and reduce radiating pain. Treatment involves specific repetitive movements, postural correction, spinal traction, and core strengthening to take pressure off the herniated disc and allow it to heal.

When should you see a physiotherapist?

Consult us if neck or back pain travels down your arm or leg, or if you experience any numbness, tingling, or weakness. (Note: Loss of bowel/bladder control is a medical emergency requiring immediate hospitalization).
