Post-Fracture Rehabilitation

After a broken bone has healed and your cast or brace is removed, the surrounding muscles are often extremely weak and the nearby joints are incredibly stiff. Physiotherapy is essential to restore normal mechanics and rebuild the strength lost during the immobilization period.

What are the common symptoms?

• Extreme stiffness in the joints above and below the fracture site\n• Noticeable loss of muscle mass (atrophy)\n• Pain and swelling when attempting to move the limb\n• Fear or apprehension regarding placing weight on the bone

How do we treat this condition?

We focus on safely mobilizing stiff joints and slowly reintroducing load to the healing bone. We utilize hydrotherapy (where applicable), graded resistance training, and balance/proprioception exercises to return you to your pre-injury level of function safely.

When should you see a physiotherapist?

Contact us as soon as your orthopedic doctor clears you for weight-bearing or range-of-motion exercises, usually immediately after cast removal.
